Here's a wonderful route mostly on deserted gravel roads. We ride to see a unique phenomenon - an inland lake ("See" in Dutch) which lies at the heart of the Vredefort impact crater. The lake is extensive, about some 5km by 2km, and it sometimes hosts flamingos along with many other water birds. What a great open-air ride! The atmosphere is clean, the vistas reach into forever, and we don't see another soul except when we enter the one-horse town of Vredefort (for a much needed refuelling snack). By the way, that is a cultural experience not-to-be-missed, when you see the size of the store customers and what they consume to still their appetites before lunch. A fantastic scenic road (tar, no traffic) takes us back to Parys, with views of the Dome Bergland (collar of the inner core of the crater) all the way home. Although "only" 70km, allow around 4 hours. The back roads can be very muddy in summer, and anyway it's worth chilling out at the Inlandsee. We've got plenty more unique routes in this area! - Call us to join a ride. Graeme 084 245 2490 or Karen 082 475 8767. [email protected].
