Before you risk your life on a river come and learn some of the simple rules of river safety, boating and rescue. Get the book and get some practice in the rapids under expert supervision. Ole Man River Graeme Addison (that's me!), who launched the rafting ecotourism industry in South Africa, is once again offering the popular River Proficiency courses under the ASA curriculum. Most of the shots here were taken on the Vaal or Tugela during recent training courses, but this is just a taster and there is plenty more to learn. 3-day courses are being held on the Vaal during the holidays, with a training expedition down the Tugela Canyon early in 2011. You can qualify as a River Guide if you do the test (and have a valid first aid certificate). If you just want to look after yourself (and others) in whitewater, come on the course and go away with the competencies you need to enjoy paddling and avoid accidents. - Graeme [email protected] 084 245 2490
