John Turk and Eric Boomer encountered ice in many forms on their circumnavigation of Ellesmere Island. Turk writes: "When wind or currents transport moving ice against rocky cliffs, the ice buckles under tremendous compression. I have seen blocks of ice as big as a house turn on edge and rear up thirty feet in the air, while other blocks smash against the rock and disintegrate into a shower of crystals. Under these conditions a kayaker could be crushed or killed." — Video courtesy of Jon Turk
