Content

This DVD brings to you a condensed account of Steve Fisher and with it, delves a little into the history of the sport of kayaking. The viewer is taken from Fisher’s early days when he was a mere 6 years old as a competitive slalom and K1 paddler, to the well known extreme athlete he is today. The story told is truly captivating and inspirational. The dream life of those fortunate enough to live it is exposed and well portrayed. Hardcore creeking and first class play boating is separated by interviews and everything is well put together in chronological order and follows a solid story line.

Locations are as varied as the characters portrayed in the movie and range from the standard Nile sections right to the unknown Murchison Falls section, from the Zambezi to South Africa and also footage from Canada, California and Quebec as well as the mighty Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. Good use was made of helicopter and also high wire suspension techniques to capture the action beautifully from above as well as boat mounted cameras. Some truly awesome shots have been recorded for the purpose of this film.

Music

The music is exceptionally good. Every song follows the theme shown to you visually and this enhances the feel one gets as the movie is watched. The genre of music swings from some harder metal-type stuff all the way down to some chilled out African rhythms. I find it hard to criticise.

Conclusion

This is not a movie about one man. It is a movie about a journey. Scott Lindgren has produced a master piece with Black Book and has raised the bar for others to follow. Out of every DVD I’ve ever seen, this would rate in my top two.

Extras

There are seven extra features to enjoy. Some are never before seen footage while others are reedited versions of footage shown in the main DVD, but going more in depth and broadcasting what was perhaps not captured. The outtakes are super.
