I grew up there and its a great place for paddling. Its been dry for the last few years, but there are creeks, lots of good ww rivers are dam controlled (pros and cons) there's fantastic coast line for sea kayaking, surf spots......
Small but active paddling scene. check out www.cataractgorge.com for a great event that drags out all the locals plus the best boaters from 'the mainland' and NZ.

Other outdoor acitivities are good too; biking, climbing, - take your pick if the rivers are too dry!

in my oppinion (admittedly i have never paddled any where else in my life so i have no comparison) Tassi has a fair few good rivers and creeks, but not much in the way of play spots. the 2 that spring to mind are the forth wave and the washing machine at the upper Mersey, but these are not particularly big.

here are some links to some websites that might give you an idea of some of the stuff we have available,

Tamar and Derwent canoe club flash sites (have a look at the pictures, and maybe post you question again so that some people who no what they are on about can give you a decent answer)

Some interesting videos
