I'd once seen a fellow almost do a 'piroutte' on the stern of his boat at the peak of a wave as he paddled out into ocean surf... does this have a name? - can someone breakdown the technique?

any other tricks one might try 'on the way out'??

I keep doing that with my Marauder surfkayak but that's completely unintentional (albeit very cool looking ;) ). Basically it happens when I'm slightly late paddling over a steep wave. Luckily I mostly make 180's on my stern so I'm a decent position to dive down along the wave (not a very good looking surf but it saves my *ss).

kick flips are possible i.e. doing a back deck roll just as you pass the peak of the wave. Also wave wheels on the smaller reforms i.e. doing a double pump over the peak of the smaller wave (this is actually eaiser than doing it on the flat water\"

good luck,

and happy surfin!

Just throw yourself off the back off the wave and experiment with the air time best way to learn stuff imo

Almost all downriver moves are possible in the surf, get your hands on a good instructional book or dvd and look at Wave wheels, kick flips, macho moves, etc...
Entry moves are also great if a monster wave has broken just in front of you and there's no hope of getting over it.

ps, i think that stern piroutte you were talking about is a kickflip.
