interesting, i dont know anything about surf kayaks but i always thought that the tail was supposed to have a substantial amount of valume so that the stern woudlnt sink under the breakers, is this wrong, or is this just a departure from previous designs?

Surf kayaks are undergoing massive transformations in design at the moment, traditionally there was alot of volume but the designs are getting a little shorter and more play / trick orientated, once up and running lean forward and the tail wont dip. Not sure of the specs on this one but generally the shorter the kayak means it is less likely to run the wave but more play in the pocket where all the power is.

Really there is a hybred of designs making surf kayaks simimar to play boats but much lighter and faster therefore less likely to break the wave. For example a composite surf kayak can weight as little as 7 kilos.

It is quite an exciting area of kayaking at the moment with new designs, boat makers coming into the market and people inventing new tricks left right and centre. Other than that it is great fun so if you are near some surf try and have a go in a composite boat.

Looks good, nice one mega.

I am afraid I have to disagree slightly, I don't think there is anything particualy new about low volume tails on surf boats.

Mega's back catalogue of boats:

Mega's Current range of boats

If anything I would say that the big lump of volume behind the seat is more of a new school thing really only taking off in 2005-2006. However this boat was designed by Mega's new paddler James Hawker (who used to design and make Future Kayaks and won the Open class at the Bigbury surf comp last weekend) who has a more playboaty surf style so likes a low volume tail.

huh, to me it looks like this one has much less volume in the tail than the models shown, as i said i dont know a thing about surf kayaks and my ignorance is proabbly blinding me.
