I personally feel like the paddle is more important than the kayak, but that's just me. The kayak I use is the Perception Prodigy and that has done me well. I kayak in the Midwest mostly so depending on where you're located and what waters your going into, the paddle should be different. I use the Aqua-Bound 'Sting Ray Carbon'. It is the best value for price, it's light with the carbon and very durable. Aqua-Bound paddles have done me well for 10 years.

For someone new like yourself you might want to stick to recreational paddles. Something like the Aqua-Bound Manta Ray, around $90 at REI.

Hope This helps.

Hi,

I just purchased the Aqua-bound stingray myself to hopefully paddle my pelican storm better, this is realy a beginners kayak and does not trek very well but when I was in buying the paddle I ended up buying the Native Ultimate 12 kayak, my buddy owns the base camp store were I bought it and he raves about this kayak. I kayak on many lakes and I live on Lac st Louis which is part of the st laurence sea way and it can get pretty choppe so I need a craft that is stable, not ready for any white water yet. Thanks for your help and have fun on the water.
Jeff

I have heard really great things about the Native Ultimate kayak. Looks sturdy online and worth the $1000.
