Spot: Indonesia: Klawing River

Play River: Klawing River

TBS One of Klawing river rapids

What's it like

Klawing River has small, medium, and big volume character, depending on flows and season. The only section that could be run in the dry season, around May to September is its lower section. From October to November the upper section of the river starts to live, along with the coming of wet season.

At the peak of the wet season around January, you can expect to have big water when the floods bring massive flows.

The common put-in is in Bobotsari, 11 km north of Purbalingga, below Majapura bridge. On wet season, for a longer trip, you can start running from Penisihan Falls pool, up to 8km upstream from Majapura bridge.

Klawing has 2 main playspot wave which are, TBS and Banjaran. The availaibility of the two playspots are depend on the flow. TBS is small wave and will be available in moderate level. On low and high flow the wave will disappear. While Banjaran will be available either in low or high level flow. TBS is also a name of a rapid, which is located some 500 meter from the put in. It is also the name of Bupati Purbalingga or Purbalingga Regency Government Chief.

The take out is at Galuh village where there is a good rapid as a sweet closing . But you could move 3 kms downstream to Bancar bridge to finish your trip at down town of Purbalingga. Right after the take out, you could stop at food shops that are settled by the river. One of my recommendation is to try Sroto Pengadilan, a kind of Purbalingga traditional cuisine, which is just good.

How to get there

It is not difficult to reach the put-in in Bobotsari, below Majapura bridge. What you have to do is moving 11 km north from Purbalingga, Central Java Province of Indonesia. There are many public transportation if you would like to. People will help you to tell the direction to Bobotsari when you have been in Purbalingga.

More info

Klawing has significant role in the country's whitewater kayaking development. It's not about its rapids difficulty level which is class II-III in average. But it is becoz the lower section especially at Galuh spot, is ever flowing, so that every body could practice any time 12 months ayear.

It is also playground of Tirtaseta Kayak Community who has mission to increase the popularity of whitewater kayaking in Indonesia. Tirtaseta's kayakers and couples of Indonesian kayakers were born here in Klawing river.

Locals

You'll be the only group of kayakers on the river, cause kayaking is still rather unknown in Indonesia. Sometime rafters with 1-2 rafts from Purwokerto, central Java, are seen, but generally you will be the only group of the day. The village people nearby are very friendly and will support you if you need information or anything.
