Bavaria, Bamberg, Rathauswelle: DANGER
Playspot: Germany, Bavaria, Bamberg, River Regnitz, Rathauswelle.
DANGER: the spot has changed recently and should not be used until further notice. For details (in German), click here. For photos of the old and the current situation, click here.
What's it like
Depending on water levels, which are rather stable all year, you get two waves or holes, right next to each other. Stereo rodeo!
Swimmers who miss the eddy can turn right after the third bridge, re-enter their boats and paddle the small canal upward to the other side of the put-in.
Bamberg is a gorgeous university town, more than 1000 years old. The waves are in the very centre, which means you get the most beautiful view and lots of spectators. Some of the surrounding buildings are in the spotlights, so you can even play after dark....
How to get there
Almost all directions to the city of Bamberg can be seen on this map (kindly provided by Hotel Bambergerhof). Once in Bamberg, follow the signs to 'P Altstadt', which will lead you to the underground parking place 'Tiefgarage Geyerswörth'. Unload your equipment opposite of the entrance next to the bridge (Bischoffsmühlbrücke) before parking your car. The put-in/take-out is on river right at the sandy beach between the upper two bridges.
If you don't park in the underground car park, there's a big chance to get a fine for wrong parking (very active police force).

Locals
Bamberg is a rather small town and its surfing beauty is still a relatively well kept secret, so there shouldn't be too much competition for the two sweet spots.
