Tidal playspots (commerial kayak course), UK, England, Teesside, River Tees, Tees Barrage

What's it like

This is a whitewater course, grade 2/3 with several playspots depending on the tide. The top wave is between 2 walls and there is no eddy so you will have to catch it on the fly. It is green and hard to spin but it can be done, however this changes with the tide and can change from green to broken:

Next is a few small waves and stoppers and then follows the main playspot on the course. This is the cruncher, a large hole with an eddy on river left. The cruncher can be blunted, spun, blasted and cartwheeled in short boats.

Next is valentines, a messy playspot that varies with the tide.

Then comes the bottom drop, which can be a dodgy place to play, but when the tide is right (about 1.4) it becomes a nice wave/hole. Paddle round the bottom of the course to the steps and walk a few meters back to the top of the course. The next photo shows the bottom wave at a bad water level.

Teesside can also be paddled in the dark, as the course is spot lit.The day fee is GBP 8. There is a kayaking/equipment shop and a cafe at the course.

How to get there

When approaching from the south take the A66 slip road to Stockton/Darlington, take the first slip road to Teesdale Park / Teesdale. Stay in the right hand lane and turn right at the traffic lights. Go over barrage bridge and turn left into White Water Course. The route is well sign posted.
