Galway City, Corrib River, O'Brien's Bridge
Spot: West Irenland, Galway City, Corrib River, O'Brien's Bridge. |
What's it like
An 8 meter wide smooth wave on the Corrib river, just after the right arch of O'Brien's Bridge (1/4 mile from Galway Bay).
It has big eddies, plenty depth and cold water (best in winter time though). The eddy behind the bridge center support can be powerful and grippy.
It takes at the very least 12 gates of Salmon weir open (better 14-16). Long surfs available, non breaking, up to 3 paddlers can surf together. It is followed by smaller, also surfable waves in train.
How to get there
Galway city is in the west of Ireland. The spot is in the center of the city, at the end of Shop street. You can park on the bridge and access from river right, directly after the bridge.
Locals
Kayakers from UCG KC and bemused locals looking from the bridge.
