Limburg, River Roer, Roermond Fish Steps

Playspot: Holland, Limburg, River Roer, Roermond Fish Steps.

What's it like

On this part of the Roer there is a diversion around a weir, where several fish steps have been built. The first step underneath the railroad-bridge is a small wave good for surfing. The second step is a small stopper, about 3 meters wide. Good for most vertical moves. It's a perfect stopper for beginners, not too fast. There are good eddies on both sides. The river is about 5 meters wide and around 1.50 meter deep. Water levels are good all year round. A little bit further dowstream you will find six more steps, also good for playing.

'Normally' when you want to paddle here, you have to ask for permission at the Dutch "Rijkswaterstaat" and pay for it... It costs 30 Dutch Guilders per group of paddlers (no matter how big the group is). The phone number is +31 464205700. But again, there is no control...

How to get there

From the A2 between Maastricht and Eindhoven take exit 44 Sint-Joost then turn left onto the N271 in the direction of Roermond. When you enter Roermond take the first small road right just before the first bridge at the petrol station. You can park your car on this road. The spot is on your left.

Locals

Be nice to the landowners property (there is a police station near by!)
There also a website of a group of paddlers from Roermond, in the Netherlands.
