North Island, Taupo, Waikato River, Full James
Playspot: New Zealand, North Island, Taupo, Waikato River, Full James.
What's it like
Full James is a medium to large breaking wave. At lower flows (100 cms and below) it becomes a very nice hole which makes enders a breeze. Perfect rodeo flow would have to be 225 cms. At this flow anything is possible, from flat spins to cartwheels. At low flows there is a nasty but easily avoidable rock but this is more of an annoyance than a danger. At all flows though there are huge eddies which makes returning to the top wave easy.
How to get there
The easiest way to find Fully is to turn left at the main state highway 1 Rotorua/Taupo intersection. Follow this road until you see a road sign for Aratiatia dam and rapids. Turn right here. Follow this road until you come to River Road. Turn left. Stay on River Road until you see a "Rapids Jet" sign. Turn right. Follow this sealed/gravel/mud road until you can go no further. You should now be in the Full James carpark. Get out of your car and check out the flow!
